Smoky Mountain Baseball!
Tennessee Smokies baseball is a must for any baseball fan who'll be in the Sevierville area. The Smokies are a Minor League team based in the Knoxville metro area, and play in the Southern League. As of the 2010 season, the team is a AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, and the ballpark - Smokies Park - is located in Kodak, Tennessee just a few miles from Sevierville. The ballpark opened in 2000, and seats up to eight thousand people. They have a very nice modern stadium with excellent seating for viewing the games. They are also located in a an easy to find, convenient location. The stadium's just a short drive from Pigeon Forge - Gatlinburg - Knoxville, at the intersection of Highway 66 and I-40.The team name of course comes from the Great Smoky (Smokies) Mountains. Before 2005, the Smokies were a AA affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. The new contract with the Cubs is expected to run through the 2012 season. A number of notable major league players have played for the Smokies in the past, including Carlos Delgado, Shawn Green, Roy Halladay, and Filipe Lopez.
In 2004, the Smokies were the Southern League champions. Tennessee Smokies baseball is a lot of fun for the whole family, and has been for many years. The season runs between April and September, and includes plenty of promotions. You might see fireworks, guest mascots, or a number of other interesting attractions when you go.
You can buy tickets to a single game over the phone, by calling the Smokies Park, or you can purchase them at the gate. Season tickets go on sale in March, plus you can easily book a game in advance for your vacation in the Sevierville area. Seats are very reasonably priced, and you can get some excellent discounts if you're over the age of 55, or traveling with children 12 and over. The discounts apply to field and bleacher level seats.
The crowd tends to be pretty evenly divided by age. You can see several generations of one family come out together and have a lot of fun rooting for the home team. It's a great way to bond together over an old fashioned baseball game. The setting is impressive, too. The Smokies ballpark is located in a lush area with gentle, rolling hills and panoramic views.
